Sub-field Environmental condition in the area surrounding the source/intake: Presence of Vegetation or Forest Cover
Categorization
No Risk
- No imminent danger to River intakes, Lake intakes or BH well intakes due to the presence of vegetation or forest cover
- Medium Risk
- Choked pipeline
- Clogged strainer and spring chamber due to roots of plants and trees in the vicinity
- Roots of trees growing into the well
- Fallen leaves forming a cushion absorbing and retaining surface run off which can eventually percolate into the well and cause contamination
High Risk
- Choked pipelines
- Blockage of infiltration galleries
- Depletion of source due to excessive use up of the available water by the vegetation
- Contamination and damages to structures by wild animals
Not Applicable
- Presence of vegetation has no risk on Intake types, Rivers, Lakes/Reservoirs and Borehole wells
Use and utilization of the Dashboard
This Dashboard displays CBOs/WS Systems with potential risks to their Sources/Intakes due to the presence of vegetation or forest cover in the vicinity.
It enables the relevant and / or responsible agency to plan for, and arrange the type of interventions required, when called for. It could be technical advice on the type of vegetation to be grown to enhance the source and improve its quality and the types to be eliminated to avert potential risks to the system/structures.

Sub-field Environmental Condition in the Area surrounding the source / intake: Adequate Protection
Categorization Applicable mainly to point sources such as Borehole wells, Dug wells and Springs and the pertinent Intake structures.
Fencing as a measure of protection may not be possible in case of stream Intakes, River Intakes and Lake/Reservoir intakes.
Sealed spring intakes impose no risks. Fencing and limiting access to a spring intake reduces the risks of damage and pollution.
- No Risk
- Medium Risk
- High Risk
- Not Applicable
– Protection by fencing around is not applicable for Rivers, Lakes/Reservoirs and Stream Source / Intake types

Sub-field Environmental Condition in the Area surrounding the source / intake: Possibility for Erosion or Landslide
Categorization
Assessment of the risk factor shall be based on the observations on the levels of situation at the location in respect of the geography.
Observations on the intake area and its immediate neighbourhood alone may not suffice to make an assessment of the situation. The situation assessment and the risk factors have to be identified having taken into consideration the situation in the entire area.

Sub-field Environmental Condition in the Area surrounding the source / intake: Presence of contaminants from household waste or wastewater
Categorization
Homesteads in close vicinity, household pit latrines, home gardens, solid waste, personal washing and bathing, open-air defecation, animal pens, and wastewater intrusions are some of the main sources of contaminants that can adversely affect a water source harnessed for a drinking water supply system.
Due consideration has to be given to the extent of the presence of these contaminants in assessing the risk factor in respect of a source/intake.
- No-Risk
- Medium Risk
- High Risk
- Not Applicable
Usage of the Dashboard:
This Dashboard displays CBOs/WS Systems with potential risks to their Sources/Intakes due to the presence of contaminants from household waste or wastewater.
It enables the relevant and/or responsible agency to plan for, and arrange the type of interventions required when called for. It could be technical advice on the type of protection best suited for respective Sources/Intakes to avert potential risks due to the presence of contaminants from household waste or wastewater.
Based on the information they could initiate or advocate for pollution prevention programmes to mitigate the risks in the catchments areas of the respective WS Systems, especially where the risks are higher.

Sub-field Environmental Condition in the Area surrounding the source/intake: Presence or evidence of Hazardous Waste
Categorization
The main sources of hazardous waste generation are Agricultural, Industrial or Artisanal activities. Cash crops in close vicinity to the run-off area of a stream source or a spring area pose a risk, as agrochemicals and chemical fertilizer used in such land get easily washed down with rains, thus contaminating the source.
Similarly Dug well intakes sited in or in close proximity to paddy fields have a high risk of being contaminated due to the agrochemicals used.

- Medium Risk
- High Risk
